Man. I love the way you guys break down your techniques.
Great point —> “Sure, we don’t want to go overboard with exact match anchor text links, but if you have enough branded links to balance them out…they can still work in certain industries.” It reminds me of what Wil said in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkNjJLCVQ_A&list=PL69FA57EF5C23B07F&index=6&feature=plpp_video. Great advice and has helped a ton.
Are you manually building the branded links to balance things out?

    Brian:
Outstanding to-the-point digital comp. analysis article, and your citing WolphramAlpha was further proof how you’d gone the extra-mile in seeking to be definitively helpful. Very nice.

    Hi Chris,

Thanks, I appreciate the compliment! I’m glad you found it helpful, as my goal was for it to be a guide that people would want to bookmark and return to when they begin their own competitive analysis.

Killer post. I find Link Detective outputs to be pretty bad. Any other tools similar you can recommend?

No doubt, these are some amazing tools but are there free alternatives for these tools??

  • http://www.seerinteractive.com/blog Brian E. Donohue

TagCrowd is free. OSE offers a free 30 day trial. Link Detective offers a free trial. MajesticSEO has a free version, the lowest paid version is $50/month. WolphramAlpha has a free 14 day trial. You can always pull your backlinks from Google WebMaster Tools if need be. Try looking through Annie Cushing’s Must Have Tools, linked to above, there are some free tools in there.

The Smooth 3D histogram graph on WolphramAlpha for domain and page authority is really fantastic, what a great way to represent the link landscape!
