Welcome back to People of Seer: Remote Edition! In this series, you’ll get to meet our team and learn about what makes them the best around (in our humble opinion).
💡 Sam Poelstra, Senior Manager – Consulting, Strategy & Analytics, Concert goer and Artichoke fan #1
I started out freelancing online – writing content primarily, and stumbled on SEO as a concept. Was really into examining the ways Google prioritized information across the web and how that affects the information that people take in. Now that I’ve moved into a channel agnostic role, it’s fun to analyze data critically the same way.
I coordinate with specialists and team members to facilitate deep-dive analyses of client data, and take findings deeper to turn them into compelling stories that clients can action across all of their marketing channels.
Day to day, I’m collaborating with analytics analysts, client engagement folks, channel account teams, and clients to find the right questions to ask of the data we have available in order to solve business problems. Beyond that, the Strategy & Analytics team relies on peer-to-peer training so we’re always collaborating to build our skills together.
Seer’s community impact was a huge part of the reason why I joined Seer.
I love that there’s support to volunteer and, and do things with your unlimited PTO in whatever way you see fit.
Now that I’m starting to get some energy back after the two years of, of Covid-ness, it’s been something that absolutely keeps me engaged at Seer.
I’m really grateful for the company focus around volunteering, mutual aid, and trying to make a difference – for people who work here and then also communities that we live in.
How would you explain what it is like working at Seer to an alien? What are the culture, people, and work like?
Listen, this ain’t your average space ship. The whole crew is brilliant, you’ll be constantly learning, and you’re going to need to adapt because Seer is a project — we move fast and sometimes break things but we never shy from it, we adapt.
What is your favorite part of your Seer career that isn’t part of your job description? (examples, book club, volunteer task force, passion project)
I love coffees with Seer folks. There are so many ways to get to know people at Seer, but grabbing a 30-minute chat with anyone to say hello and learn about each other is such a norm at Seer – whether you’re just starting out at Seer or you’re an exec.
I recently took up sewing and it’s been fun to learn how to alter my own clothes to fit ME, instead of the other way around. I also love to write, and am working to publish more of my work.
I grew up all over the place.
I spent most of my childhood in Moscow, Idaho, then a brief stint in Reno, and went to high school in Bozeman, Montana. I’m a western kid through and through and I can’t sit still, so as an adult I’ve moved across the country twice.
My parents were babies when they had me, and they did the best they could with the tools they had available until I moved in with my Grandma at 13. I learned resourcefulness from my Mom and resolve from my Dad, but back then there was addiction all around my siblings and I. Always lots of love around, no matter what and I’m grateful for that.
My grandmother! She raised me from the time I was a teen, and she’s a constant model of what self-assured determination, kindness, and care can look like in the face of life’s greatest challenges. She’s always out here transforming her community and uplifting her family. I strive to be as steadfast for others as she’s been for me my whole life.
I’m out seeing live music! Or eating at a restaurant! Or at a gallery! I also love to travel and camp, swim, general adventuring.
My first thought was an artichoke but that isn’t strategic at all… I just really love them. I’d bring a book – Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, a notepad and pen (hopefully that counts as one item?), and a radio for music, even if I couldn’t use it to communicate.
Check out the data only we can give you on what make Seer a great place to work (in addition to Sam, of course!).
